Emotion and information may be coupled without being identical. At T1, an unusual noise makes danger plausible: fear directs attention toward safety. At T2, the source is identified as harmless. The cognitive conclusion may change while bodily activation persists.

Transforming the relation to emotion

Containment, regulation and extinction

Containment
Holding back an expression or action, without establishing what happens to the rest of the configuration.
Regulation
Changing one or more components, their functional weight or their consequences according to the situation.
Extinction
An observed decrease or disappearance of a response, which cannot be inferred from an action becoming calm.
Suppression
A term requiring specification: expression, conscious access, activation or another dimension.

A cautious translation of the “point of freedom”

Hypothesis: another possibility for action may become accessible before the emotion disappears. This assumes neither total control, nor a choice that is always available, nor independence from bodily, social or situational constraints.

Recognizing an emotion does not guarantee access to a regulation strategy. That strategy may be available outside the action window, or take part in arbitration without determining the final action. Its functional weight — its effective influence here — does not automatically confer behavioral authority.

The Quranic corpus may put distinctions among patience, trust, hope, fear, orientation and action to work. It is neither reproduced at length here nor presented as evidence.

In the Quranic passages examined, several orientations may be attributed to the same subject without their coexistence establishing a psychological conflict. The same term associated with fear also appears alongside different possibilities for action. We therefore distinguish the named emotion, the possibilities described in the text and the experienced intensity, which these passages do not measure. A capacity that is not mentioned is not therefore absent.

How Understanding and AI Engineering opened and constrained this research area

Distinctions from understanding — presence, access, availability, mobilization, temporality, trajectory, descendants, revision, stability and transformation — met those from AI engineering — capacity, permission, authority, action, provenance, current dependency and availability of an alternative.

This intersection makes new questions visible: must a present emotion govern action? Does a capacity for regulation exist functionally if it remains inaccessible? Does a cognitive revision immediately transform emotional descendants?

Literature as an external constraint

Six families of scientific intersections

Each comparison below indicates what the studies examine, the point of contact with our distinctions, the limit of the comparison and a testable consequence. The publications’ categories remain their own.

1. Regulating in context

What is examined. A 2026 meta-analysis connects cognitive control — inhibition, updating and task switching — with regulation strategies. Associations are generally small and vary by strategy. A cross-cultural meta-analysis of 249 articles, 150,474 participants and 37 countries or regions shows that associations among reappraisal, expressive suppression and psychological functioning vary with cultural and demographic factors.

Translation. Cognitive reappraisal means changing how a situation is interpreted; expressive suppression holds back its visible expression.

Intersection. Available capacity ≠ mobilized strategy ≠ effect on the trajectory. Same strategy ≠ same functional value.

Limit. These mainly associational results establish neither total control nor a universal “reappraisal good / suppression bad” rule. A cultural average is not an individual.

Next test. Separate capacity, strategy, timing, behavioral effect, experience and maintenance over time.

2. Body and interoception

What is examined. Interoception is the perception and processing of signals from inside the body. Reviews distinguish afferent signals, detection accuracy, neural processing, interpretation and context, and describe bidirectional brain–body loops.

Intersection. Body ≠ entire emotion, but body ≠ incidental element.

Limit. A physiological measurement captures neither the object, nor the interpretation, nor the full experience.

Next test. Compare two configurations with similar activation but different objects, interpretations or tendencies.

3. Dynamics over time

What is examined. Work on emotion dynamics distinguishes trajectories and regularities: average level, variability, instability, inertia and reactivity. Affective inertia indicates how strongly a present state is predicted by the preceding state; it is not synonymous with immobility.

Intersection. Persistence ≠ duration alone; emotion at T1 ≠ identical configuration at T2; trajectory ≠ point state.

Limit. A brief or average measure may conceal which components change.

Next test. Record dynamics, reactivity, inertia, transformed dimensions and actions still available.

4. Valence, object and decision

What is examined. A 2024 review contrasts models centered on valence — pleasant or unpleasant character — with models in which emotions of the same valence can produce opposite decisions. A meta-analysis of 61 studies on intertemporal choices finds effects moderated by emotion category, induction method and other characteristics.

Intersection. Pleasant valence ≠ validity; same valence ≠ same function; “joy about what?” remains a necessary question.

Limit. A laboratory task is not a whole life, and a group effect is not an individual trajectory.

Next test. Vary object and context at comparable reported intensity, then observe orientation and decision.

5. Anger and regret: targeted cases

Anger. A meta-analysis of 81 studies examines avoidance, acceptance, reappraisal, rumination and suppression. Heterogeneity is high and most studies are cross-sectional. It does not validate “anger = crossed boundary,” but constrains us to separate emotion, strategy, action and descendant.

Regret. A 2024 experiment shows that a regulation framing may lessen regret and physiological activation without straightforwardly changing its anticipated influence on choices.

Intersection. Anger ≠ single strategy; regret ≠ learning ≠ repair.

Next test. With similar reported feeling, compare the effective transformation of future action.

6. AI and multimodal recognition

What is examined. Affective computing develops, among other things, systems that classify visual, vocal or physiological signals. Performance depends on datasets, labels, context, modalities and their fusion.

Intersection. Recognizing a pattern ≠ feeling; classifying a category ≠ establishing subjective experience; more modalities ≠ direct access to experience.

Limit. Benchmark performance ≠ functional understanding of context ≠ subjective experience.

Next test. Check whether better classification is actually accompanied by better consideration of object and context.

Competing scientific classifications

A plurality of taxonomies

Appraisal theories — concerning how a situation’s meaning for a person is evaluated —, discrete emotion theories, and constructionist, dimensional and interoceptive approaches do not all partition emotion in the same way. They assign different roles to the body, appraisal, categories and action tendencies.

  3. Does action change while reported feeling and some bodily signals remain stable?
  4. Does cognitive updating durably precede emotional updating?
  5. Does the same strategy produce different effects depending on culture or relational context?
  6. Does an AI system improve classification without improving its functional understanding of context?
  7. Which dimensions in our partitioning become redundant in certain tasks?
  8. When does the vocabulary of an “emotional message” cease to provide observational power?

These questions are not given artificial answers here.
